His most significant achievement was the discovery of hypoxia-inducible factors.(HIF-1), a protein that governs the genetic response to oxygen availability. This groundbreaking discovery has had profound implications for understanding and treating hypoxia-related diseases such as cancer and ischemic cardiovascular disease. For this research, he was among the recipients of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
